Reports To: AHL Head Coach / Pittsburgh Penguins Goaltending DepartmentDepartment: Hockey OperationsLocation: Wilkes-Barre, PAOverviewThe Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (AHL) are seeking a detail-oriented, technically proficient, and forward-thinking Video Coach. This position is an integral part of the coaching staff, responsible for managing all aspects of team and opponent video analysis, pre-scouting, and live-game data capture.
As an employee of the Pittsburgh Penguins organization embedded daily with the AHL club, the Video Coach works hand-in-hand with the coaching staff, player development personnel, and support departments to provide seamless visual data and technology solutions that directly influence game strategy and player growth.
The ideal candidate possesses a relentless work ethic and tireless passion for hockey, bringing elite detail and preparation to the rink every day to support the coaching staff and players.
ResponsibilitiesGame-Day & Live OperationsLive Game Tagging: Responsible for live tagging all WBS Penguins games (home and away) utilizing Hudl Sportscode to provide real-time data and clips.
Intermission Reviews: Run all intermission video review sessions with coaches between periods, providing instant access to requested clips and tactical look-backs.
Replay & Challenges: Set up and facilitate the Spiideo Replay system during games to provide the coaching staff with critical, immediate visual input on potential coach’s challenges.
Bench-to-Locker Room Tech: Provide players with iPads and technical support in the dressing room for real-time access to in-game video clips and shifts.
Pre-Scout Preparation & PresentationOpponent Pre-Scout: Tag and analyze opposition games to build and provide the Head Coach with a comprehensive team pre-scout package prior to all games.
Special Teams & Tactics: Work closely with Assistant Coaches to build special teams pre-scout videos for upcoming opponents, alongside any required tactical graphics or slides.
Faceoff Analysis: Build and present a dedicated faceoff pre-scout package to the team prior to all games.
Goaltender Pre-Scout: Coordinate with the Goalie Coach to prepare and distribute detailed opposing goalie pre-scout information, including video loops and written reports.
Practice Operations & Player DevelopmentPractice Plan Design: Collaborate directly with the coaching staff to build daily practice plans utilizing CoachThem.
Session Recording & Tagging: Utilize Spiideo to record all on-ice sessions—including full team practices, specialized skills/development sessions, goalie sessions, and injured player rehab skates. Live tag all practices by individual drills.
Video Meetings: Run the computer and video hardware during team presentations to players, ensuring seamless execution of game reviews and tactical meetings.
Technology, Logistics & AdministrationDressing Room Tech Management: Responsible for all in-dressing room video presentations and technology, including pre-scout video delivery, goalie loops, iPads, and TVs. This includes complete video hardware set-up at team hotels and road arenas.
Hard Copy Materials: Print and post all required physical materials for the dressing room (including pre-scouts, daily schedules, practice plans, faceoff sheets, etc.).
Media Distribution: Promptly distribute all processed game and practice media directly to coaches’ laptops post-session.
Technical Support: Act as the primary internal resource to assist all coaches and staff with Hudl Sportscode or general computer troubleshooting.
Cross-Departmental Communication: Coordinate daily with the equipment and medical departments regarding daily lineups (game and practice), ensuring the equipment staff is updated on jersey colors and line combinations.
Required QualificationsPrior experience as a video coach or video coordinator at the professional, NCAA, or major junior level is required.
Advanced, expert-level proficiency with Hudl Sportscode, Spiideo, and CoachThem is highly preferred. Strong familiarity with Mac/PC environments, iPad management, and standard AV hardware/routing setup.
Deep structural understanding of systems, tactics, faceoff configurations, and advanced hockey terminology to accurately tag and sort data under tight time constraints.
Ability to work non-traditional hours, including late nights, weekends, and holidays, while managing a demanding professional hockey travel schedule.
Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with coaching staff, elite athletes, and hockey operations executives.
