An estimate, not tax advice. It uses 2026 federal brackets for a single filer with the standard deduction and no credits, each state's single-filer brackets with its standard deduction or personal exemption, no local income tax and no state disability or paid-leave payroll taxes. States marked “approximate” use figures we haven't checked against the state's own tables. Your paycheck will also differ by benefits such as health insurance.
What comes out of a US paycheck
- Federal income tax. Progressive: each slice of taxable income is taxed at its own rate, from 10% to 37%. Taxable income is your pay minus pre-tax deductions such as a traditional 401(k) and the standard deduction ($16,100 for a single filer in 2026).
- State income tax. Ranges from nothing (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming don't tax wages) to top rates above 10%. The calculator applies each state's single-filer brackets and its standard deduction or personal exemption. For California, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Pennsylvania we checked the figures against the state's own publications. The other states use the Tax Foundation's 2026 table of state brackets and are marked approximate: they leave out some phase-outs, credits and special rules. Some cities and counties, such as New York City, Philadelphia and Maryland's counties, add a local income tax, and some states take a payroll tax for disability or paid leave. Neither is included.
- Social Security. 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 (2026).
- Medicare. 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000.
- 401(k) contributions. Optional, pre-tax, and capped at $24,500 a year in 2026 (more if you're 50 or older). They lower your income tax but not Social Security or Medicare.
Comparing offers in sport
- Location changes the math. The same salary can leave you with noticeably different take-home pay depending on the state, so compare offers after tax, not before.
- Seasonal roles. Game-day, event and seasonal jobs are often paid hourly or for part of the year. Work out what you'll earn over the year before you enter it.
- Variable pay. Sales and ticketing roles often add commission or bonuses. Enter the base salary here and treat the rest as upside.
- Check the posted range. Many employers now publish a pay range with the job. We show it on the listing whenever they do.
Questions
Why is my real paycheck different?
Payroll also deducts things this calculator doesn't know about: health, dental and vision insurance, HSA or FSA contributions, commuter benefits and local taxes. Filing status, other income and tax credits change your income tax too.
Is my salary stored anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to GetSportJobs.
